Unit 3: Bases in Curriculum

Curriculum development is a process that relies on a certain basis or foundations. Curriculum development has several bases. Bases are the pillars upon which the building lies. These foundations are very important. Under the Bases of the curriculum, there are four topics. I found the nature of learning and learning styles interesting and related to me. This is because, during my SITP, I met so many diverse learners. As a teacher, one should know which learning style students prefer. Some students learn through seeing, some through hearing, and some through tactile and kinesthetic. After knowing their learning styles, I was able to cater to their needs to help them learn. I let my students work/engage in group activities, practicals, model presentations, and teaching through video and audio. This not only helped students to learn the concept but also motivated them to do better.

The curriculum has rich content and strengths placed to integrate various concepts. Nevertheless, Cultural pluralism is least interesting to me. It deals with a variety of ethnic and generational lifestyles grounded in the complexity of values, linguistic variations, skills hues (colors), and even cognitive worldviews. Cultural pluralism may lead to cultural relativism where different ways of life are treated morally equally regardless of whether the accepted customs are viewed as immoral by others. This may threaten the identity of the country in the longer run.
